You play a large or huge river, and build all the houses / the residential district along each side of the river. With a small dock area on either side (2 bridges in) and bridges here and there. This way you have an underground mountain river city. The benefits of this design are having the kitchen/workshops close to respective warehouses w/ wooden autodoors. The long hospital for quick, linear access. Two kill boxes, which will save resources. The rec room in the center. There is also growing zones in the center (somewhat) and an indoors geyser to create free heat. Basically I start with placing the leisure/dining area, from that 2 corridors branch out into apartment corridors (the main starting point is actually those small patches of gravel where I plan to plant flowers for that room). Apartment corridors gets easy access to various work areas like kitchen, hydroponics, barn, work rooms hospitals etc.
